Many materials can be used to manufacture surgical sutures. From a global market perspective, suture materials are generally divided into two categories: natural materials and synthetic polymer materials. Today, approximately 20–30 commercially available suture materials exist worldwide, with 15–20 materials accounting for the majority of the market.
Natural Absorbable Materials
- Plain Catgut
- Chromic Catgut
- Collagen
Most natural absorbable materials have now been replaced by synthetic absorbable polymers due to their improved consistency, strength retention, and predictable absorption profiles.
Natural Non-Absorbable Materials
- Silk
- Cotton
- Linen
Among these, Silk remains the most widely used natural non-absorbable suture material.
Synthetic Absorbable Materials
This is the largest category in today’s surgical suture market.
Homopolymers
- PGA (Polyglycolic Acid)
- PLA (Polylactic Acid)
- PLLA (Poly-L-lactic Acid)
- PDLLA (Poly(D,L-lactic Acid))
- PDO / PDS (Polydioxanone)
- PCL (Polycaprolactone)
- PTMC (Polytrimethylene Carbonate)
- P4HB (Poly-4-hydroxybutyrate)
Copolymers
The following materials are widely used by leading global suture manufacturers:
- Polyglactin 910
- PGCL (Poly(glycolide-co-caprolactone))
- Poliglecaprone 25
- Polyglyconate
- Glycomer 631
- Polyglytone 6211
- Caprosyn
- PGA/PLA Copolymer
- PGA/TMC Copolymer
- PGA/PDO/TMC Copolymer
- PGA/PCL/TMC Copolymer
Most modern absorbable sutures are based on combinations of Glycolide, Lactide, p-Dioxanone, ε-Caprolactone, and Trimethylene Carbonate (TMC).
Synthetic Non-Absorbable Materials
- Polypropylene (PP)
- Polyamide (Nylon)
- Polyester (PET)
- Polybutester
- PVDF
- PTFE
- UHMWPE
- Polyether Ester
Specialty materials also include Stainless Steel and Titanium Alloy sutures for specific surgical applications.
Which Materials Are Best for Barbed Sutures?
Our barbed suture cutting machine is compatible with several materials, including:
- PP (Polypropylene)
- PDO (Polydioxanone)
- PGCL (Poly(glycolide-co-caprolactone))
- PCL (Polycaprolactone)
Although PP can be processed on our machine, our experience shows that PDO, PCL, and PGCL deliver the best barbed cutting performance.
Why Does PP Produce Less Consistent Barbs?
The reason is related to the material itself and the manufacturing process.
Commercial PP sutures generally do not have a perfectly round cross-section. Instead, they are often slightly oval or elliptical.
Our machine forms barbs by rotating the suture while the cutting blade repeatedly enters the material at a fixed cutting angle. Because the cutting angle remains constant while the rotational position of an oval suture cannot always be identical, the resulting barbs may vary slightly from one another.
In contrast, PDO, PCL, and PGCL have more uniform cross-sectional geometry, allowing the machine to produce highly consistent barb dimensions and superior cutting quality.
Based on our testing and cooperation with global customers and manufacturers, these three materials consistently provide the best machining results.
Production Value
The commercial value of finished barbed sutures is significantly higher than that of ordinary sutures. A finished product consists of a suture material, a surgical needle, and sterile packaging.
According to publicly available market information, certain premium barbed suture products can be sold at very high prices depending on the brand, material, and application.
With our current barbed cutting technology, a single machine can produce approximately 200–400 barbed sutures within a 20-hour production period, depending on the product specification and process requirements.
Because barbed sutures are high-value medical products, manufacturers often achieve a rapid return on investment after production is established. The actual payback period depends on production yield, product type, labor cost, selling price, and market demand.
