How to Manufacture Barbed Sutures

How Are Barbed Sutures Manufactured?

The manufacturing of a barbed suture involves several precision processes. Every step directly affects the final product quality, including barb geometry, needle retention strength, tensile strength, and clinical performance.

After selecting the appropriate suture material, such as PDO, PCL, PP, or PGCL, the first critical manufacturing process is barb cutting.

Step 1 – Barbed Cutting

The smooth suture is processed using our Suture Barbed Cutting Machine, which precisely machines hundreds of uniform barbs along the suture body.

Our machine supports the production of:

  • Single-angle Barb
  • Dual-angle Barb (Push)
  • Dual-angle Barb (Bevel)

without replacing any cutters or mechanical components. Operators only need to select a different Recipe on the HMI to switch between different barb geometries.

This intelligent recipe management system significantly reduces setup time while improving production efficiency.

Step 2 – End Connection

After the barb cutting process is completed, both ends of the barbed suture are assembled according to the product design.

Depending on the product specification, the two ends may be configured as:

  • Needle +Suture+ Needle
  • Needle + Suture+Loop
  • Needle + Sutere+Triangular
  • Loop + Suture+Square

Different medical applications require different end configurations.

Step 3 – Needle Crimping

For products requiring surgical needles, the barbed suture is connected to the needle using our Automatic Needle Crimping Machine.

The machine precisely swages the suture into the needle, ensuring:

  • High pull-out strength
  • Excellent concentricity
  • Stable production quality
  • Consistent needle attachment

This process is one of the most critical quality control steps in surgical suture manufacturing.

Step 4 – Loop Forming

For loop-type barbed sutures, our Automatic Suture Loop Machine forms the loop using an ultrasonic welding process.

The loop is produced with:

  • High dimensional accuracy
  • Strong welding strength
  • Stable loop consistency
  • Excellent production efficiency

The ultrasonic welding process eliminates the need for additional adhesives while ensuring reliable mechanical performance.

Step 5 – End Treatment
Depending on the product design, the free end of the suture may undergo additional processing, such as:
End sealing
End trimming
End forming
Customized end treatment
These processes improve handling performance and ensure compliance with customer specifications.

Step 6 – Final Bulk Product

After both ends have been completed—whether by needle attachment, loop forming, or end treatment—the barbed suture is considered a bulk finished product.

At this stage, the product is ready for the next manufacturing processes, including:

  • Visual inspection
  • Winding
  • Card insertion
  • Packaging
  • Sterilization
